By Dr Lauren Fowler – Lead All–on–4® Dental Surgeon and Co-owner, Next Smile Melbourne
Earlier this year, I had the immense privilege of launching something very close to my heart - Melbourne’s very first all-female dental study club, Smile Society.
As an All-on-4® surgeon and co-owner of Next Smile Melbourne, I’ve been fortunate to be part of many professional circles over the years. But I’ve often found myself craving a space where women in dentistry can come together - not just to learn, but to truly connect. A space that feels welcoming, inclusive, and genuinely empowering.
Why Smile Society?
The idea for Smile Society grew out of countless conversations with peers and colleagues -women who, like me, are navigating the complexities and rewards of our profession. We were looking for something different: an environment that fostered not just professional development, but real community.
So, I set out to create it.
Smile Society was designed to be more than just a study club. It is a chance to bring together passionate, skilled women from every corner of the dental world - implant surgeons, general dentists and dental specialists - to collaborate, exchange ideas, and uplift one another in a relaxed and inspiring setting.
A Night to Remember
Our first evening was a huge success. We shared clinical insights, stories, laughter, and left feeling more connected - not just to our profession, but to each other. The sense of support and camaraderie in the room reminded me exactly why we need more spaces like this in our industry.
What’s Next?
The energy of our inaugural event confirmed what I’ve always believed: when women support women, incredible things happen. Our second event in July was again a roaring success, with plenty of new faces, keen new members, and some really interesting insights into leadership and “Whole Brain Thinking”, presented by Sheree Jonathan, the JPAC Business manager at Nobel Biocare. I am so thrilled that Nobel Biocare has committed to supporting the continued growth of Smile Society, commiting to supporting us in hosting future events that focus on education, connection, and empowerment.
Built by women in dentistry, for women in dentistry—Smile Society is where professional community meets genuine connection.
