All-on-4® Zygomatic Implants

An alternative for patients with insufficient bone in the upper jaw.

What are Zygomatic Dental Implants?

Zygomatic implants are designed to provide support for a full arch of teeth in cases where there is insufficient bone in the upper jaw to support traditional implant placement. The procedure involves anchoring the implant into the zygomatic bone (cheekbone), which provides a more secure foundation for the All-on-4® dental implant.

Zygomatic dental implants are typically longer than traditional implants and are placed at a 45-degree angle in the jawbone to maximise support and stability and remove the need for bone grafts.

Zygomatic implants are specialised dental implants designed for patients with severe bone loss in the upper jaw. These implants provide a stable foundation for the attachment of dental prosthetics/bridges when traditional implants cannot be used due to inadequate bone structure. As with the All-on-4® technique, new teeth can be usually connected to them within 1-2 days of the surgery. Depending on the outcome of your diagnostic x-rays, zygomatic dental implants places into the zygomatic bone may be offered where the amount of bone available in the upper jaw is insufficient. You may only require one zygomatic implant or as many as 4 zygomatic implants.

Why Would I Need Zygomatic Implants?

Zygomatic implants are an advanced solution designed for patients who have been told they don’t have enough bone in the upper jaw to support traditional dental implants. Rather than undergoing complex procedures like bone grafting or sinus lifts, patients can opt for zygomatic implants as a less invasive and more immediate alternative. These longer implants are anchored into the cheekbone (zygoma), which provides excellent support even in cases of severe bone loss.

This technique is particularly beneficial for individuals who have experienced significant bone resorption due to long-term tooth loss, trauma, or periodontal disease. Zygomatic implants offer enhanced stability and durability, making them a reliable foundation for fixed teeth in patients who would otherwise be ineligible for traditional implant procedures.

Additionally, single dental implant treatment involves the placement of one implant at a time, with a healing period between each implant placement. Once the implants have integrated with the jawbone, individual crowns or bridges can be attached to replace missing teeth. This approach can be effective for treating individual missing teeth or smaller gaps in the smile, but it may not be the best option for patients who have lost all or most of their teeth in one or both arches.

As opposed to Next Smile Australia’s two-stage Malo Protocol, regular implants follow a five-stage process to receive implants as a form of dental restoration. The process is as follows:

  1. The damaged or decayed tooth is removed.
  2. Bone grafting is undertaken if needed.
  3. The dental implant is then surgically inserted into the jawbone.
  4. Over the next few months, the bone fuses with the implant and begins to heal.
  5. Once the area around the implant has healed, the artificial tooth (crown) is placed.

If you have multiple missing teeth and want to restore your smile, All-on-4® dental implants may be the solution for you.

Benefits of All-on-4® Zygomatic Implants?

  • Suitable for Severe Bone Loss: All-on-4® Zygomatic implants are an excellent solution for patients with extensive bone loss in the upper jaw, eliminating the need for bone grafting procedures.
  • Immediate Loading: In some cases, zygomatic implants can support immediate loading, allowing for faster placement of prosthetics after implant surgery. For patients with soft bone, immediate loading is generally not possible on zygomatic implants and is likely to occur up to 3 months post-surgery. Final bridge is fitted 12 months post-surgery when full osteointegration has occured.
  • Enhanced Aesthetics and Function: Zygomatic implants provide improved aesthetics and function compared to removable dentures. They feel and function more like natural teeth, allowing for confident speech and a wider variety of foods to be enjoyed.
  • Longevity: With proper care and oral hygiene, zygomatic implants are a long-lasting durable and reliable solution for patients.
  • Quality of Life: Zygomatic implants may significantly enhance a patient's quality of life by restoring their ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.
